EVENT DAY QUESTIONS
Check-in for the event will open at 5 p.m. on Friday, February 24. The event will begin at 6 p.m. with music. There will be a program with speakers and music from 7-10 p.m. Morning rise will begin at 6 a.m. with a short stage program. The event will conclude between 7 and 8 a.m. on February 25.
We encourage people to take public transit, taxis, or ride services. There will be limited access to area parking lots. Main streets such as Michigan Avenue have a ban on overnight parking during winter. If you are coming from the suburbs, you can drop gear off and park in a downtown lot and quickly cab to the location. Look back closer to the event for shuttle service info.
What to bring:
Even though the event is inside a church, it will still be cold inside. The weather in Chicago can be very cold in February. We would suggest you bring lots of clothes to layer, extra socks, a heavy winter coat, hat and gloves. Also please bring rain gear and an umbrella, in case it rains. Also, you can bring a sleeping bag, flashlight, water bottle, etc. You do not need a tent.
What not to bring:
Kerosene or Propane heaters
Animals (except for service animals)
Security and safety issues:
We will have volunteers providing security that night at the entrances to the church.
There will be lawyers and other legal monitors to make sure there are no issues.
Medical services and a basic level ambulance will be available during the entire event.
Will the event be accessible for all?
This event is is being held at a church that is wheelchair accessible. However, the bathrooms are not, so we will have wheelchair-accessible port-o-lets right outside the church. All people attending the event will use the port-o-lets because of the limited plumbing inside the church.
If you need sign language interpretation, please contact us two weeks prior to the event at JThaney@aidschicago.org.
Will there be heaters or an indoor space?
The entire event will take place inside the church; however, the bathrooms will be port-o-lets outside of the church.
Will there be food at the event?
Yes. Free sandwiches, snacks and beverages will be provided in the evening and morning. We will provide vegan and vegetarian meal options. You can also bring your own snacks and beverages, except for alcohol.
Will there be phone-charging stations available?
Will there be open restrooms at the event?
Portable restrooms will be available with hand sanitizer dispensers. One of the facilities will be wheelchair accessible. All of them will be staged outside the church.
Do we have to stay/sleep out for the entire event?
If you are registered for the event, we strongly encourage you to stay all night. If there is a pressing need, exceptions can be made on a case-by-case basis. No registration fees will be refunded for leaving before the morning. There will also be a limited number of tickets available for people to purchase just to attend the performance Feb. 24.
CAN WE CREATE OUR OWN SATELLITE EVENT?
Yes, this year we are encouraging people, groups, schools and churches to host their own “Sleep In” the weekend of Feb. 24 to raise funds for one of the designated charities. You can use the same registration process and raise funds. We would love to list your event if it is public. Contact JThaney@aidschicago.org if you are considering doing a satellite event.
Can children attend this event?
Yes, children age 17 and under can attend with their parents or legal guardians. If they are not attending with their parents or legal guardians, their parents or legal guardians must sign a release waiver.
What happens if the weather is bad?
We will hold this event no matter the weather, unless the city declares an emergency.
Can I invite friends/family who did not register to keep me company during the sleep out?
